Is there a new kayak access point on the Guadalupe River?
Yes, actually, there are two new access points on the Guadalupe River.
The first access point is off Moody, west of the Moody Street Bridge, on West South Street. Look for the sign as West South eventually turns into Wilden Street.
The access point is on city property and was constructed using city staff and rented equipment. The access point is similar to the access point in Goliad. Soil was removed to allow for access to the river. It is considered a very primitive access point compared to the other two in Riverside Park.
The second access point is off U.S. Highway 59, the Guadalupe River, of course, and Round Hole Road. This access point was installed by a contractor as part of a project with the Texas Department of Transportation. The ramp is similar to the access point in Riverside Park.
Instead of a four-mile trek adjacent to Riverside Park, you now have an opportunity to travel five to 12 miles from the boat ramp in Riverside Park. This will surely test your kayaking and canoeing abilities.
Whether you are a novice or a pro, please be prepared before kayaking or canoeing. Tell someone your plans. Make sure you wear a life vest. Carry water for hydration. Purchase a water-tight box for your keys and cell phone (emergencies only, don't check text messages while navigating the river).
If you are new to kayaking/canoeing consider taking a trip with an experienced person.
The Coastal Bend Paddlers is a group of people who meet quarterly and discuss kayaking/canoeing. This group assists the parks and recreation department with a beginners kayaking class. For more information, contact the paddlers at firstname.lastname@example.org.
