POINT COMFORT - A small fire broke out at 7:22 a.m. Monday inside Formosa Plastics Corporation's Olefins 1 plant.
The fire began when a tube carrying feed stock cracked and the feed stock ignited, company spokesman Jim Shepard said. The company immediately shut down the furnace and the fire burned itself out in about 10 minutes.
"The fire was reported out officially at 7:33," he said. "It was not anything to it."
Calls reporting possible smoke went out over a phone bank to people in the Point Comfort and nearby area, Shepard said, explaining it's an automatic recording the company turns on any time such an incident occurs.
