Victoria attorney dies in car crash near Lockhart

A Victoria criminal defense attorney died in a two-car collision about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lawrence Elliott, 54, was driving south on U.S. Highway 183 just north of Lockhart when his Chevrolet car crossed into oncoming traffic, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Diego Cardoso said.

Cardoso said witnesses reported the car driving erratically before it crashed into an 18-wheeler in the southbound lane.

Neither vehicle had time to put on their breaks, Cardoso said.

Victoria attorney Norman Jones said he had known Elliott more than 10 years, and it was Elliott who was first interested in joining Jones' Victoria County Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association.

"He volunteered to help out," Jones said. "He worked very hard and he was very well-known and respected."

Judge Laura Weiser remembered Elliott just as fondly.

"Larry was a very good defense attorney who took his job very seriously, but had a great sense of humor," she said in a Facebook message. "I always enjoyed working with him because he had a fine wit, a keen intellect and was passionate about his work."

Weiser added Elliott had mentioned just last week how excited he was to see his two children, both girls, who were driving back to Texas from Nevada - a trip she said had him worried for their safety.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was Michael Johnson, 37, of Converse. Johnson reported minor injuries, but declined treatment, the trooper said.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, Cardoso said.

Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene by Caldwell County Justice of the Peace Raymond DeLeon.

The crash remains under investigation.
