Spherion will move into vacant StarTek building Aug. 1

After 10 years on Main Street, Spherion has found a new home.

The local call center will move into the old StarTek building at 1309 E. Red River St. on Aug. 1.

The move doubles Spherion's space from 30,000 square feet to 60,000, and likely means added convenience for the company, said Bill Wendlandt, who owns Spherion's current building at 120 S. Main St. It can be difficult for a company that employs between 350 and 450 employees to fit into a multi-tenant facility.

"StarTek is self-contained," he said. "It's perfect for them."

The Red River building has seen its share of change.

Once an Albertson's grocery store, it sat vacant for several years before the Denver, Colo.-based StarTek, another call center, performed a $2.5 million renovation and opened in 2007. StarTek closed in January, leaving the building idle once again.

The Red River site is an excellent site and StarTek put a lot of money into refurbishing the building and upgrading it technology-wise, said Randy Vivian, president and CEO of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

Vivian hadn't heard of the company's upcoming move, but said he's always glad to see businesses moving into existing spaces.

"Obviously, I don't want to see vacant buildings in town," he said.

Spherion has called Main Street home for 10 years and Wendlandt called the company a "great tenant."

"At the same time, we're thrilled to death they're growing and expanding and found a space to accommodate that," he said.

Although the Main Street building has prospective tenants looking at the soon-to-be-vacant space, nothing is set in stone, he said, explaining he's looking for a tenant that's interested in the downtown region's overall growth.

"This gives us a great time to re-tenant the space," he said.

Representatives with Spherion's corporate communications office confirmed the move, but attempts to contact them for further information were unsuccessful.
