A sign depicting Spanish-style architecture, a gated entrance and the message "construction begins early 2010" sits at the corner of North Main and East Power streets, a site The Balconies on Main will soon call home.
And that construction is just around the corner.
A spec home is the next step for the approximately $6.5-million townhome project under way in downtown Victoria.
The building process is still in its planning stages, said Don Elder, the project's developer. The concept should be set in stone within a week or so, if the pricing comes through.
Construction will likely begin in mid to late August, Elder said.
The goal of the spec home is to give people a better idea regarding what they can expect from the development, he said, explaining Krueger Construction is slated to build the model.
The project has stirred interest but many people don't understand what the finished product will include, he said.
"I think that, as we build it, we'll generate lots of closings based on that model home," Elder explained.
The end result will boast 15 three-story townhomes with fireplaces, wrought-iron balconies, the option of adding an elevator and more. The gated community will also include its own park.
Units range from the upper $300,000 to $500,000 price mark.
The development is one of several changes coming to the city's downtown area and it's exciting to see, Elder said.
"There are lots of things going on," he said. "And people are going to need a place to live."
