For an evening of Italian food and fine wine that helps support a good cause, join members of the Victoria Adult Literacy Council from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carino's Italian.

The fundraiser at 4904 N. Navarro St. will feature a five-course meal and samples from the restaurant's wine collection.

The menu includes cherry and apple balsamic salad, pasta carbonara, grilled chicken Romesco and raspberry tiramisu. A different wine will be available with each course.

The selection of auction items is also impressive.

The items include heirlooms and memorabilia from the Hauschild family, said Stacey Milberger, executive director of the Literacy Council.

The silent auction also includes artwork, handmade quilts and gift baskets from local merchants.

"This is a very important fundraiser for the council as we continue to support adult students through volunteer tutors to help them better their education and get jobs. These needed literacy areas include reading, writing, math and computer skills," she said.

"Especially in this current economy, we are hearing more and more from people who need to improve their reading skills to gain employment to support their families," Milberger said. "It's never been more important for us to have volunteers as tutors, and also donations to continue our programs."

Tickets to the fundraiser are $60 and available at 802 E. Crestwood Drive or by calling 361-582-4273.
