PORT LAVACA - Law enforcement officials have identified the man who was found dead on the side of the road Tuesday morning.
Investigators believe the body of Daniel Isaac Cruz Meza, 30, was removed from a vehicle after he died and placed near the roadway in the 3200 block of State Highway 35 South, near the Little Chocolate Bayou bridge.
All indications are that Meza was a Mexican citizen, Police Chief John Stewart said.
No documents proving he was here legally were found, although officials know that at some point Meza worked for an oil company, whose location is unknown, in a job that required a CPR certification.
Stewart said U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is looking into the status of his citizenship.
"They are looking into it from their end, but we just don't know," Stewart said.
The cause of death is still unknown pending results from toxicology tests.
"We don't have anything to indicate what the manner of his death was," Stewart said. "Sometimes we end up waiting on toxicology tests. But there was nothing visible that told us that he was murdered."
