AUSTWELL - Entrance into the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge will be free this weekend for Family Fishing Free Day.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday refuge staff will assist with wade fishing at five access points in the San Antonio Bay.

No fishing license is required and parking is free both days.

Limited equipment will be available to the public, said refuge spokeswoman Vicki Muller.

Booths where people can learn about fishing, rules and regulations and boating safety will be available from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday.

Local volunteer fire departments will man bait, food and drink stands. Money from concessions will benefit the Austwell and Tivoli volunteer fire departments and the Refuge Friends Group.

Other refuge activities, including a 16-mile driving automobile tour loop and seven hiking trails, will also be available for free.

Three campsites are located within six miles of the refuge facilities.

The refuge is six miles southeast of Austwell.
