The Independent Missionary Baptist General Association Baptist Training Union Congress will hold its 99th year of religious training next week.
"It's important because as well as a religious function, it's an educational function," said Dorothy Harris, member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church.
The church is hosting the convention, which travels around the state. About 500 people are expected to attend.
The emphasis will be on training spiritual leaders in all aspects of religious teaching and will last from Monday through Thursday.
"I would think people would learn methods by which to conduct Sunday school classes, and how to conduct workshops and to promote enthusiasm and interest," Harris said.
The convention will begin Monday with a noon sermon at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 704 E. Park Ave., and an evening devotional/musical service at 6:30 p.m. at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, 608 E. Convent St.
Tuesday through Thursday will be a street evangelism workshop beginning at 6 p.m. at 2702 Nova St.
Late night services will also be held Tuesday through Thursday at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church from 10 p.m. until midnight.
Other workshops will be throughout the week.
