Advocate wins general excellence in state journalism contest

The Victoria Advocate earned first place for general excellence at the 131st annual Texas Press Association convention.
In awarding the general excellence award, the judges said about the Advocate: "Excellent layout and color use. Ads spring off the page and are effective. Writing is complete, concise and thoughtful."
The Advocate also won eight other awards in the contest featuring 1,743 entries from 172 newspapers. Other honors:

First place, feature photography, Frank Tilley.
Second place, editorials, editorial board.
Third place, headline writing, staff.
Third place, page design, Kimiko Fieg.
Third place, sweepstakes, staff.
Fourth place, column writing, Aprill Brandon.
The Advocate competed against daily newspapers with a paid circulation ranging from 7,000 to 99,000.
