The University of Houston-Victoria softball team received a wake-up call Tuesday at Burdge field in a doubleheader split against Division I Texas Southern University.

The No. 13 Jaguars committed five errors and managed just four hits in a 3-1 loss to the Tigers, who entered the game with a 2-7 record

"The first game was one of those games just not up to our level," UHV assistant coach Lindsey Ferguson said. "It was a punch in the gut for us."

The five errors were a season-high for the Jaguars. The four hits on offense weren't much better.

Tigers pitcher Ashley Ramirez did a nice job of keeping the Jaguars' hitters off balance, Ferguson said.

Leadoff hitter Izzy Glowney went 2-for-3 for UHV. Araceli Galindo went 1-for-3 with a double.

Mostly, Ferguson said, the UHV bats were silent that first game.

In the sixth inning, Gianna Robinson hit a solo home run for the Tigers that proved to be the game-winning run.

Pitcher Tasha Rotramel led a revived Jaguars team in the second game, pitching a complete game 2-hitter with seven strikeouts as UHV won 8-0. Rotramel improved to 6-2 on the season.

The Jaguars' bats came alive in the second game as well, jumping on the Tigers with two runs in the first inning. Allison Hinton went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Brittany Faas went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Galindo added a triple and an RBI. Brittany Boren went 2-for-2.

"They picked themselves up and did their jobs in the second game," Ferguson said.

The wake-up call came because the 13-4 Jaguars head out to the prestigious Orange Beach Classic in Orange Beach, Ala., where a collection of top teams will play this weekend. The Jaguars have a 1-2 record against top 5 teams, beating No. 3 Oklahoma City and losing twice in close games to No. 5 Lubbock Christian.

"Going into Alabama, these are the types of games we need to win big. We need to take care of business, and we didn't," Ferguson said. "The first game was just not acceptable."
