The Victoria Advocate is a winner in the 2009 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism.
The national honor recognizes outstanding work published or broadcast in 2009. The Advocate won top honors in the category of non-deadline reporting for its 16-month "Fatal Funnel" series documenting the many issues surrounding illegal immigration in South Texas.
Public Service Editor Gabe Semenza was the lead reporter on the series, which included a rich multimedia presentation at www.VictoriaAdvocate.com/FatalFunnel. The Advocate competed for the honor against all U.S. newspapers with a circulation of less than 50,000.
Winners will be honored at the Society of Professional Journalists' annual convention Oct. 2 in Las Vegas. Other winners being honored include the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and NBC Nightly News.
