Downtown Victoria fuel leak keeps crews busy

An estimated 50 to 75 gallons of fuel leaked onto the street and at least some of it got into the storm sewer in downtown Victoria Sunday evening.
The leak was reported about 8:30 p.m. at 405 E. Church St., said Shannon Martin with the Victoria Fire Department. One person was treated at the scene because of the fumes, but refused to go to the hospital.
A fuel line on a local paving contractor's truck broke, causing the spill, Martin said.
"There were probably crews working there all night," he said. "Unfortunately, the product ran off into the storm drains."
The fire department and street department responded to the call and the city environmental department was notified. Martin said the contractor had a vacuum truck called in to help remove the diesel from the storm sewer.
