WHARTON - Seven people have been released from the hospital after a Sunday afternoon crash on U.S. Highway 59 near County Road 467 injured eight people.

Around 12:45 p.m., a van was northbound in the outside lane on U.S. Highway 59.

Wharton Police Officer Jared Cullar said somehow the vehicle began to drift across the lanes, causing the driver to over correct.

This led to the van's driver losing control of the vehicle.

Culler said the van rolled three times before coming to rest in a ditch.

The van had eight occupants, three adults and five children.

It was not known which adult was driving.

Patricia Garcia and Virginia Vega, two of the adults, were airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Meanwhile, the third adult, Lillian Vega, and all of the children were taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

All the van's passengers, except for Garcia, were released from the hospital on Sunday in good condition.

A Memorial Hermann administrator said Garcia was also in good condition, but she remained hospitalized as of Monday morning.
