HALLETTSVILLE - James Myrick has been Lavaca County's emergency management coordinator for 14 years.
The Vietnam War veteran who lost both legs to a land mine, also serves as the county's Veterans Services Office.
Lavaca County goes into a storm watch mode whenever a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico, Myrick said.
The hurricane is monitored and decisions are made with advise of the National Hurricane Center, National Weather Service and conference calls with the State Emergency Management Department, among other agencies.
Myrick, 59, said the emergency operations center is constantly being upgraded with new equipment through Homeland Security grants.
Kathy Shepard is the county's assistant EMC.
