Sister Anne Bosco Nguyen, a member of the Dominican Vietnamese Sisters assigned to Sts. Cyril & Methodius Parish in Shiner, shows her skills at rolling out the strudel dough and making one of the 2,800 strudels that Shiner parishioners made in 2009. The Shiner strudel makers are planning to make a similar number of the homemade apple strudels at the 2010 Strudel Bake on Saturday, Nov. 13.

The Annual Homemade Apple Strudel Bake sponsored by Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13.

This project, now in it 24th year, turns out strudels by the thousands, with more than 2,800 made last year.

The unbelievable task of hand-rolling each pastry is completed in one day, but only with the help of hundreds of volunteer parishioners, as well as friends of the parish, who come to help at the event.

Included in the group of volunteers will be Sister Ann Bosco Nguyen who is assigned to Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church in Shiner. Nguyen is a member of the Vietnamese Dominican Community, of Houston. Even though Nguyen has been at the Shiner assignment for three years, 2009 was the first year her busy schedule allowed her to help at the parish fundraiser. She quickly learned the art of rolling the soft, pliable strudel dough to a paper thin consistency and plans to be among the volunteers to help with this year's event.

Strudel patrons are asked to place their order by Thursday, Nov. 11. For pick-up in Shiner, place your order by calling 361-594-2361 or 361-594-2262. Orders may also be sent by e-mail to: aduke@sscmshiner.org or by using an order form on church website at www.sscmshiner.org. Pick up time is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the parish gym in Shiner.

For the convenience of customers throughout South Texas, the strudels will be delivered to several area cities.
