Kevin Fowler won't be home for Christmas. But don't worry. He's still going to have one heck of a happy holiday.
That's because Fowler and his band will be hitting the road on their annual Deck the Dance Halls Tour and spending the season with thousands of cheering fans. Better yet, on Dec. 23, Fowler will be spreading his own unique brand of country Christmas cheer at Schroeder Dance Hall in Goliad as part of the tour.
"Dance halls are where we got started. It's where we cut our teeth and earned a fan base. This tour is our way to get back to the dance halls. During the year, we're busy playing other venues, so once a year, we make it a point to come back," Fowler said, adding that the tour includes 18 dance halls from Corpus Christi to Amarillo. "This is a good opportunity for us to get back to where we started."
The tour began the Friday after Thanksgiving and ends on New Year's. In addition to playing the old favorites, Fowler said they'll also be playing some new tunes and maybe even throw some Christmas songs into the mix.
"Spending Christmas on the road, it's a lot of fun. Everyone enjoys it. There's just something about playing for a crowd right up against the stage, who are cheering, drinking beer and having a good time," he added.
The tour comes on the heels of Fowler's latest album release, "Best of ... So far," a compilation CD that brings together all of his biggest hits. The album will hit stores Dec. 7.
"We've been calling it the Kevin Fowler start kit," he laughed. "It's been 10 years since the first album, and it seemed like a good time to release a greatest hits album. All the fan favorites are on there, as well as four new songs."
Among the hits on the CD are "Pound Sign," "Don't Touch My Willie" and one of Fowler's personal favorites, "Long Line of Losers."
"Picking a favorite song is like picking a favorite child, but I will say one of my favorite songs to do live is 'Long Line of Losers.' It's tongue-in-cheek, funny and sums up my musical style," Fowler said.
Also on the album are the previously unavailable songs "Beer Season" and "What I Wouldn't Give For Your Love."
"Listening to this album is a sort of timeline of my career. You can see how our sound changed and how its grown. Its really come a long way," he added. "We did the first album on a shoestring budget and recorded it at my buddy's house. Now when we do an album, it's on a full-blown production scale."
Although this winter Fowler is looking back with his greatest hits album, come this spring, he'll be looking ahead when he releases another new album full of new tunes. The first single, "Girl in a Truck" will hit Texas radio in early 2011.
"Best of ... So far" will hit stores, including Walmart, on Dec. 7. The album can also be pre-ordered at www.lonestarmusic.com.
