For 80 years now, passersby on the Bloomington Highway have glimpsed distant views of the Patrick H. Welder Sr. house.
However, what one does not see from the highway is the vast scale of the house or the spacious swimming pool, fed by very chilly well water.
That's all about to change Saturday when tours of the house and grounds will be conducted between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Italian Renaissance palazzo was built in 1930 and designed by Page Bros., architects of Austin. The house was built at an estimated cost of $300,000.
In addition to touring the house, participants will have full access to the formal gardens, the pool area and the grounds surrounding the house.
A gala cocktail party will kick off the weekend's festivities on Friday evening. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and drinks will be served. Tours of the house and grounds will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a meal catered by Ric Tinney & Panache beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets for Friday's gala event are $75 each and are available from Victoria Preservation Inc., 205 W. Goodwin St.
Tickets for Saturday's tours are $15 and run from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
