John Mendez Jr. is hoping to win the Place 2 seat on the Bloomington school board to be a voice for students and teachers.

Mendez wants to improve the college credit opportunities for students despite the district's financial constraints.

Mendez said he hopes to stop the trend of students leaving the district to take dual credit college classes.

"We need to figure out a way to quit losing students and keep them here and give them opportunity right here in Bloomington," he said.

Mendez, a former Marine sergeant and Little League coach, believes he's qualified to serve on the board because he knows most of the town's youth.

"I'm from here and most of them know me," he said. "I've got a grasp of how things work."

Mendez said earning parent's trust is the key to the district's success.

"Once you earn their trust, I think everything will take care of itself. We're there for them," he said.
