Refugio Fourth of July celebration scheduled for Labor Day weekend

REFUGIO - Better late than never - that is what Refugio Mayor Rey Jaso is saying about the town's Fourth of July celebration on Labor Day weekend.
The event was scheduled for July 4, but the threat and rains of Hurricane Alex led the city to postpone the celebration, Jaso said.
"It canceled everything," said Jaso, who is coordinating the event.
For a good turnout, Jaso decided to move it to the next holiday the majority of people had off.
The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Refugio County Fairgrounds.
Several of the fairground's halls will have arts and crafts, kids games and adult games like egg toss and three-legged race, Jaso said.
Some games will have entry fees because there are money prizes included for first place, he said.
Music and food will also be available.
The Majestics will play live music for a Fourth of July dance. The fireworks display is scheduled for 9:15 p.m, Jaso added.
"We always estimate 1,000 to 1,500 people," Jaso said. "Weather permitting, the community always comes out."
