Annual Shiner fall picnic is Sunday

SHINER - It's time once again for kolaches, games, dinner and dancing at the 89th annual Shiner Catholic Church Fall Picnic.
Thousands are expected to attend the event on Sunday at Shiner American Legion Hall, 1023 S. Ave. G.
Some of the featured festivities this Labor Day weekend include two auctions, prize giveaways, arts and crafts, an outdoor biergarten and 14 hours of music and dancing.
Doors open to the country store at 8 a.m. and homemade baked and canned goods will be available for purchase.
Shiner's famous dinner will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes an assortment of beloved local fare including a choice of three meats, fried chicken, stew, country sausage. Dinner plates are $7.50 and plates to-go can be purchased from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Shiner Knights of Columbus Hall, on alternate U.S. Highway 90 E.
Many amusements are planned throughout the day, most notably the country auction beginning at noon.
Among the featured items to be auctioned off this year are the handmade quilts sewn by a group of local quilting ladies from the Shiner community.
A cattle auction will follow at 3 p.m.
Children attending the picnic can participate in such games as the ring toss, fish pond, arts and crafts, and cake and plant wheels.
Bingo begins at 1 p.m., and offers cash and other prizes. The grocery wheel starts at 5 p.m.
Parents can grab a beer by the cup or pitcher at the outdoor biergarten, while listening to live music from 2 to 10 p.m.
Some of the musical acts expected to play include local accordion players, the Shiner Hobo Band, Czechaholics, Jack Motley and Los Kolaches. The live music will kick off at 11 a.m. and continue to 10 p.m. A late-night dance will commence at 9 p.m. and go until 1 a.m.
While there is no entrance fee to the picnic, there is an $8 fee to attend the dance.
The picnic is sponsored by Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
