Dow gives community grants

More than $60,000 in grants were awarded in the 2010 Dow Gives Community Grant program.

Representatives from the nine nonprofit organizations who were awarded grants picked up their checks during a reception Aug. 25 at the Dow-Seadrift plant.

Of the nine groups receiving funding, four of them represented emergency responders - the Nursery, Raisin and Fordtran volunteer fire departments and Seadrift Area Volunteer Emergency Services. Their grants totaled about $25,000.

Funds will help to pay for radio equipment, fire truck improvements and protective clothing.

Other recipients included the Austwell-Tivoli Lions Club, $6,000; Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, $8,460; Perpetual Help Home, $2,080; The Texas Zoo, $9,505.70, The Victoria College Foundation, $9,630.50.

OPPORTUNITIES: Registration for the next Victoria Dog Obedience classes will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday behind the Victoria Mall. The cost is $75 for seven weeks.
