UHV reaches record-high enrollment

Preliminary enrollment numbers released Wednesday for the University of Houston-Victoria are at a record high.
"We of course are very pleased that so many students see UHV as a good value in higher education," said interim president Don Smith.
Enrollment numbers totaled 4,149, which translates to a 13.5 percent increase from last fall.
Smith credited new academic programs, the School of Nursing, athletic programs and the new underclassmen for the success.
"We've had an increase all around, and of course the new students have contributed to that," Smith said.
Wednesday, the school recorded 319 enrolled underclassmen. Late registration continues throughout the week, and the school expects additional students will trickle in.
Smith also added the school is now about 16 percent over budget projections.
The campus has done a number of improvements to accommodate growth, says Lindsey Koch, director of student life and services. More Wi-Fi areas have been installed on campus, extra lounge areas and classrooms have been added.
"We're really focusing on making sure there's a residential campus experience for these students," she said.
The trend is something administrators hope will continue.
"While the demographics will change percentage-wise we still expect to continue our growth," Smith said.
