PORT LAVACA - Though school has started, it is not too late for kids to receive mandatory free vaccinations in Calhoun County.

The Port Lavaca Rotary Club will host a Shots Across Texas and Wellness Round Up on Saturday at the Victoria College Calhoun County Center Auditorium, said Laurie Harvey, a rotary member who also works with the college.

"If it weren't for immunizations, we'd still see small pox running rampant," she said.

The club, Memorial Medical Center and the county is sponsoring the event, which last year immunized 70 students, Harvey said.

Kids ages up to 18 years old can receive the vaccinations, she added.

"It's very important," she said. "It's required for school."
