Megan Alex had been eyeing Queeny, a 4-month-old Schnauzer from Adopt-A-Pet, for two weeks.

But when the salt and pepper pooch walked down the runway in a purple fez outfit at Saturday's Rescues and Runways Fashion Show in the Victoria Mall - she was sold.

"I had been trying to get them to adopt her," Alex said about her parents. "We have six adopted dogs."

The show Saturday was a fashion show for Maurices, a women's clothing store in the mall.

This year is the second year the nationwide store has showcased its upcoming fall fashions while also benefiting a local animal shelter.

Though only one dog was adopted at the Saturday show, several donations were given and families greeted the furry, four-legged models with sighs of affection.

"We need to spread the word about adopting our furry friends," said Carol Klages, president of Adopt-A-Pet.

Bill Alex, Megan Alex's father, agreed that it's hard to say no to animals in need.

"They need a home," he said as he waited for an Adopt-A-Pet volunteer to hand him adoption paper work. "They need love and someone to scratch them behind the ear."

Ken Dunham, of Victoria, had his full-bred, long-haired dachshund Sebastian head down the runway with one of the models.

Dunham has been fostering the 7-year-old dog and trying to raise money for surgery for some of Sebastian's blindness.

"These animals need help," he said.

All donations go toward helping Adopt-A-Pet continue its care of dogs and cats, Klages said.

Money is used to provide, food, shelter, surgeries and anything else the animals need to be healthy and ready for adoption.

Maurices also saw benefit from the fashion show.

"We were actually pretty busy," said Monica Dela Garza, assistant store manager. "We had a good little rush."
