'Shrek the Musical' coming to Houston

Sept. 22, 2010 at 4:22 a.m.

Once upon a time (well, actually in October) in a land far, far away (Houston), there temporarily lived a stage musical. Featuring a hideous ogre and one spunky, butt-kicking princess, the show's name was "Shrek" and its life's purpose was to entertain the peasants throughout all the land.

Yes, folks, "Shrek the Musical" is coming to the Hobby Center starting Oct. 19., with all new songs and the familiar characters you've grown to love (Donkey! The Gingerbread Man! German-esque sounding Three Little Pigs!). The show is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film.

The national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical began this July in Chicago and will stop in Houston through Oct. 31. "Shrek" features a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Olivier Award winner Jeanine Tesori and direction by Tony Award nominee Jason Moore, according to Playbill.com. The show also stars several of the original Broadway cast.

The show is family-friendly, and all ages are welcome.

Tickets range in price from $35.80 to $82.15 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
