National Night Out to kick off Saturday
Sept. 23, 2010 at 4:23 a.m.
The National Night Out kick-off party will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Victoria Mall.
The event will promote the Oct. 5 National Night Out, which encourages neighborhoods to host block parties in an effort to unite against crime.
The Saturday event will be in the Dillard's Courtyard and will feature booths ran by local law enforcement agencies, including the police department, sheriff's office, fire department and the Army National Guard.
There will also be a bounce house, refreshments, a K-9 demonstration and entertainment from the Victoria Karate Academy and the St. Joseph Starlighters, among others, said Officer Chris Guerra, with the Victoria Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit.
Last year was the most successful year of the Crime Prevent Unit's biggest yearly event, with Victorians hosting more than 20 block parties, Guerra said.
The police department, sheriff's office and fire department will make appearances at parties throughout town on Oct. 5.
"It's going to be a great time, and hopefully people will come out and enjoy it with us," Guerra said. "We want to encourage as many people as possible across the city to show criminals that they're united and taking a stand to look out for one another."
National Night Out is sponsored by local law enforcement, the Victoria Mall and Target, which is the nation-wide sponsor.
