West High School drill team instructor DJ Jaynes was placed Wednesday on paid administrative leave pending reassignment.

Tami Keeling, school board president, said she could not say why Jaynes would be moved.

"Those are administrative decisions, and that's why I don't know the reason behind it," she said.

Diane Boyett, communications manager for the district, would not discuss the specifics of the move.

"She is an employee of VISD," she said. "Anything related to her employment is a personnel matter and not to be discussed."

Parents of former drill team officers believe the reassignment came about because of six grievances filed against Jaynes since July 28.

"I feel that all of this came about because us three families filed our grievances and provided VISD with factual information, and they came to the conclusion that they saw fit," said Kim Unger, whose daughter was a former drill team member. "They realized what was being done was wrong."

Unger, who filed two grievances, said the documents explained that Jaynes mishandled booster club monies and did not follow booster club guidelines or federal laws regarding non-profits.

"I hate that it had to come to this, but all you have to do is follow the rules," she said. "I am happy with the outcome."

Unger also said the documents explained Jaynes harassed students and parents.

Jaynes did not return a call Wednesday evening for comment.

Shannon Evans, whose daughter has been on the team for two years, was shocked to hear about the reassignment.

"I couldn't ask for a better instructor. She's taught these girls, and they're wonderful girls," she said. "It's just going to be a great loss."

Jaynes has been a drill team instructor in the district for more than 25 years.

The team is scheduled to perform at an away football game Friday. The team has an assistant director - Robin Allen - but no details have been released as to who will serve as an interim director.
