The Cade Middle School Parent Teacher Organization went virtual Thursday night, holding its first online meeting via Facebook.

"We're in that era where people are so busy, but everybody's connected," said the PTO's co-president Sheryl Murphy.

The organization has more than 60 members in its Facebook group, and Murphy said she noticed more participation in the online chat than in their last face-to-face meeting.

One thread about fundraisers garnered 66 comments; another 44 comments remained on a thread about PTO officers.

"At this level - middle school - everybody is so busy that it's almost impossible to get enough parents to have a common day that they can meet," she added. "This way you can do it anytime, and it's still on the website, on Facebook, so others that missed it can still go there and look to see what went on."

Murphy posted on the group's wall updates, questions and responses, and those who were online from 8 to 9 p.m., jumped in on the live discussion by posting comments.

Conversation on the page ranged from cordial to lighthearted to all business.

Murphy said the PTO actually allows for virtual meetings in its bylaws. She said she thinks the first virtual meeting was a success and hopes to do it more often.

"We had several who joined in with lively conversation, who were able to express thoughts on different things," Murphy said.

After the hourlong meeting, Murphy added one more post.

"Thank you all for being a part of history," she wrote.
