INEZ - About three acres of a hay meadow burned at 8 p.m. Wednesday at J-2 Ranch Road and Nickel Road because of a downed power line. Firefighters and others extinguished the blaze in 30 minutes.

Eyewitnesses helped suppress the fire. Teresa Moorman said she saw the smoke from her backyard, about a mile away from the scene.

"We saw smoke and came down to figure out what happened," she said. Moorman called a member of the Inez Volunteer Fire Department, who later called the Victoria Fire Department.

Moorman and off-duty volunteer firefighter Pedro Sanchez, saw the flames and took action.

"We just happened to drive by and wanted to help control the fire," he said.

They noticed the power line down, and Dee Stuart, called Victoria Electric Coop. The owner of the property, David Meek, was at home when he received a phone call.

Victoria County Fire Marshal Ron Pray said the volunteer department took care of the fire, and no investigation will take place because the cause is known.
