Shiner author Barbara Tieken will be signing copies of her new historical fiction novel, "Bull Vaulter, Alena of the Isle of Green," from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Shiner Restaurant and Bar, 103 E. 7th St.
Tieken, who writes a weekly column for Historic Old Town Shiner in the Shiner Gazette, sets her novel in Minoan Crete in 2100 B.C.E, and follows the life of Alena, a young Cretan bull vaulter.
She sails with her fellow vaulters to perform at the Harvest Festival at one of the Minoan colonies on the southern coastline of the Peloponnese.
The festivities are disrupted by a band of Kurgan warrior-horsemen from above the Black Sea who have been invading the settlements of Old Europe in search of new grazing lands.
The book, self-published through Xlibris, also is being sold at www.amazon.com and www.bn.com and comes in both an e-book version and the soft-cover 376-page edition.
Tieken, an avid environmentalist, was a 2010 performance poet at Trails and Vistas' Art Hike in Lake Tahoe and is a published poet and essayist and teacher as well as a former mayor and city councilwoman in New Braunfels.
