Linda May knows the importance of being prepared.

That's why the Mid-Coast Hurricane Conference next week is important to the emergency services director for the local Red Cross chapter and others who take part.

"This is an opportunity for everyone to come together and receive some vital information to become better prepared in the event of a hurricane hitting our area," May said. "You can never be too prepared and can never receive too much training."

The conference will be 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 5 at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 E. North St.

This year's theme is "Together We Prepare."

The conference is designed for emergency personnel, social service agencies, businesses and the general public.

The most up-to-date information available in responding to hurricanes and the recovery process will be presented.

The event includes a continental breakfast and lunch. The keynote speaker is W. Nim Kidd, chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

Topics during morning sessions include the Texas Emergency Tracking Network and Texas Baptist Men Hurricane Response team.

Afternoon sessions will include Carla: 50 Years Later and What To Do With Pets During An Evacuation.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions will be repeated.
