Public hearings planned about postal closings in Berclair, Austwell

The possible closures of post offices in Berclair and Austwell will be the focus of public meeting this week.
The meeting in Berclair is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Berclair Baptist Church, 15634 Highway 59 South.
In Austwell, the meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at My Wife's Cafe, 305 Dillworth St.
Postal customers at both meetings will have an opportunity to discuss with a Postal Service representative alternatives in the way postal services are provided.
A review of business activities at both the Berclair and Austwell post offices has revealed that the workload has declined to the point that maintenance of an independent post office at those locations may no longer be warranted, according to a news release from the U.S. Postal Service.
The Postal Service announced July 26 that it will be taking the next step in right-sizing its expansive retail network by conducting studies of about 3,700 retail offices to determine customer needs, according to the news release.
As part of this effort, the Postal Service also introduced a retail-replacement option - the Village Post Office - for affected communities.
Village Post Offices would be operated by local businesses, such as pharmacies, grocery stores and other appropriate retailers, and would offer popular postal products and services such as stamps and flat-rate packaging, according to the news release.
