COLUMBUS - Of Victoria West's six total losses last season, two came at the Columbus tournament. One to Schulenburg, one to Brenham.

The Warriors made sure they didn't have a repeat of that this year.

Victoria West won twice Saturday to win the Columbus tournament, first in three games 24-26, 25-23, 25-20 over Schulenburg, then beating Brenham 27-25, 22-25, 25-10, 26-24 in four games in the final match to win.

Kelsea Kalich led the way against Schulenburg with eight kills. Blair Butschek had 29 assists as well. It was a chance at revenge; the Warriors had lost to Schulenburg last year in two games in their tournament opener.

"We lost to them very badly last year," said coach Sandy Longoria. "We're playing with a lot of confidence right now."

In the final, Kalich again led the team with 14 kills, and Brooke Smith had a double-double, getting 12 kills and 10 blocks. Blair Butschek added 42 assists.

The Warriors are off to a 6-0 start this year, with matches against Goliad and Edna next week.
