Advocate editorial board opinion: Loop 463 would be much safer with planned project

An overpass at Airline Road and Loop 463 is a long way off at this time - possibly breaking ground in 2013 - but the reality of it is all but sealed.

We praise the Metropolitan Planning Organization for moving forward with a public hearing and a planned Jan. 10 meeting to vote on adding the project - which includes frontage roads from Mockingbird Lane to U.S. Business Highway 59 - to its Transportation Improvement Program.

The overpass will help to stop accidents - including fatalities - from happening. A motorcycle wreck resulted in the death of the rider there in August 2010.

Also, down the highway from the intersection is East High School. And with the advent of Caterpillar Inc., more traffic is expected on Loop 463.

We think this project is absolutely needed in terms of safety. So we urge the MPO to approve the project.

The project, estimated to cost $10.4 million, primarily paid for by the Texas Department of Transportation with the MPO contributing about $2 million toward the price tag, is well worth it to make that intersection safer.

As we mentioned, 2013 is a long way off., and the overpass probably wouldn't be completed until 2014. We urge the MPO and TxDOT to expedite this project as much as possible.

The intersection will remain dangerous until this project is finished.
