Error in DeWitt tax bill prompts refunds

Dec. 29, 2011 at 6:29 a.m.

Some DeWitt County property owners will soon get a small refund check in the mail after an error in calculating part of their tax bill was discovered by the Tax Assessor's Office.

"The DeWitt County tax office made a slight error on the Pecan Valley Water District tax rate. The original bill was calculated at .015 percent. The correct rate is .01301 percent," said Susie Dreyer, county tax assessor-collector.

A refund check has been generated on all payments made before Dec. 15. It takes a property value of $100,000 per account to generate a $3 refund.

Refunds of $3 or more and any taxpayer with at least four refunds due have been mailed, Dreyer said.

Remaining refund checks, most of less than $1, may be picked up at the tax office, 115 N. Gonzales St. in Cuero. Dreyer asks that taxpayers cash the checks promptly to assist with the bookkeeping.

The rate has been corrected and any taxes due will reflect the correct amount.
