The Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging is looking for volunteer ombudsmen for several nursing homes in the Crossroads.
An ombudsmen is a volunteer who advocates for the elderly by trying to improve the lives of residents in nursing homes in the surrounding seven counties, said Barbara Zimmerman, managing local ombudsman and elder rights coordinator with the agency.
"Sixty percent of people in nursing homes have no friends or family to visit," Zimmerman said. "It's a critically important position. Residents don't always know what their rights are and don't know who or how to talk to someone about concerns."
The volunteers will have training to understand the position's specific requirements.
Volunteers visit a nursing home once a week for about two or three hours.
