What you need to know about the Victoria East girls bi-district matchup with San Antonio Lanier on Monday night in Gonzales.
WHEN AND WHERE: 8 p.m. at Gonzales High School.
VICTORIA EAST AT-A-GLANCE
21-9, 7-3 District 30-4A; finished second place.
ABOUT SAN ANTONIO LANIER
Finished 14-17, 10-6 District 29-4A
The Voks closed out the season with a big win over second place San Antonio Brackenridge, the team's second, but had lost two straight before that. Lanier was dangerous on the road, finishing the regular season 9-5 on the road. Most of those wins were during the district season.
KEYS TO GAME
Watch the big three
Lanier got most of its points from just three girls: Samantha Cortinas, Ashley Carrizal and Zoey Cuellar. Each one averaged more than 10 points per game, and stopping them will be a key to success for the Titans.
The Voks have had a habit of picking up wins when the pressure is on. Just ask Brackenridge. It will be important for East to not give them the chance to step up by making smart passes, taking good shots and watching for traps.
EAST KEY PLAYERS
Adelaide Wenzel, junior guard: Wenzel is the Titans top scorer, and their best shooter. She's a multi-talented offensive player, with the ability to step back and rain 3-pointers along with the ability to drive to the basket. Often, the fortunes of a team go with its leading scorers, but Wenzel has shown she is unselfish when she needs to be, and can get others involved in the offense. Her ability to score will be critical to any Victoria East playoff run. She will need to do all the things that make her a great player, and that she does to make the team better.
Danielle Franklin, junior guard (pictured): Franklin has tremendous speed on the court, and against Floresville late in the season, she scored 22 showed she could use it as a lethal weapon to put up a lot of points. If a team tries to apply a strong full-court press to the Titans, Franklin's ability to outrun it will be crucial. Scoring hasn't been a problem, but there may be a point where she will be needed to take over a game, like she did against the Jaguars.
