The Victoria Police Department was involved in a car chase that began at 9 p.m. and lasted about 15 minutes Thursday night.

Lt. Jason Cross attempted to pull over a vehicle for traffic violations in the 1100 block of Southwest Moody Street, he said.

The driver of the vehicle, Jesse Polanco, 28, of Victoria, refused to stop and took Cross and Officer Kelly Gibbs on about a six-and-a-half mile chase, Cross said.

Polanco drove through neighborhoods and did not reach speeds of more than 50 mph, Cross said.

"He was not putting anybody in a whole lot of danger until he got closer to his home neighborhood," he said.

Polanco ran a red light at Airline Road and Ben Jordan Street and drove off-road near the 1800 block of Melrose Avenue, where he had family.

There, other officers assisted with the chase, Cross said.

Polanco drove into a yard in the 1800 block of Melrose Avenue and attempted to walk into an apartment when Cross drew his gun and ordered the suspect to the ground, he said.

Polanco was arrested on suspicion of felony evading arrest with a vehicle.

He was found to have been on parole and without a driver's license, Cross said.
