Ground was officially broken Jan. 28 on the Challenged Athletes Dream Complex at Riverside Park.

The two softball fields were donated by the city of Victoria. The fields can also be used for soccer.

The first phase of the project is to construct restroom and concession stand facilities that are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant at a cost of more than $200,000. Krueger Construction, Associated Builders and Contractors and the Builders Association have come together to donate labor and materials.

The project got its start in August 2008 through the Northside Rotary Club. The organization has received grants from a United States soccer association, as well as a $75,000 matching grant from the Johnson Foundation. A Crossroads organization also donated $10,000. The next phase of the project will be to rubberize the fields at a cost of $300,000.

The baseball league, which had four teams last year, is open to special needs children in the seven surrounding counties and more than 1,600 kids in the Victoria school district alone are eligible.
