Johnnie Cook died trying to save the family cat.

Cook, who died in a mobile home fire in Smiley on Friday, initially escaped the blaze along with his wife of 34 years, Fannie Jane Cook.

"He went back inside to retrieve the family cat and didn't come back out," said Gonzales County Sheriff Glen Sachtleben.

The sheriff said there appears to be no sign of foul play.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire, said Jerry Hagins, of the Texas Department of Insurance public information office.

A private family service is planned for the father of six with 30 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
