Father of NC congressman Mike McIntyre dies at 87

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - Dr. Douglas Carmichael McIntyre, the father of North Carolina congressman Mike McIntyre and a former Lumberton city council member, has died. He was 87.

Bob Gaddy of Floyd Mortuary and Crematory said the elder McIntyre died Friday of an undisclosed and extended illness.

Dr. McIntyre served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 through 1946 and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1947. He served in a number of local and statewide posts, including as a Lumberton City Council member from 1971 through 1976 and as mayor pro tem in 1975.

Dr. McIntyre received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1999.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday in Lumberton.
