Catholic Schools Week begins Sunday

The annual Catholic Schools Week 2011, a nationwide observance of Catholic education, will begin Sunday and conclude Feb. 5.

This year's theme is "Catholic Schools: A+ For America," and area Victoria schools will join thousands of schools across the country in participating in special events aimed at focusing on strengthening America's Catholic youth.

Faculty, students, administrators and the community alike will observe Catholic Schools Week with Masses and open activities for families.

Here are the planned events:

Our Lady of Victory School

Catholic Schools Week Events

Sunday, Feb. 4: A+ For America: In Our Parish

Event: Mass at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral at 9 a.m. attended by area Catholic schools.

Monday: A+ For America: In Our Community

Events: Delivery of thank-you letters and gift baskets to community groups; Parents invited to visit the classrooms from 8 a.m.-noon and join their children for lunch (all week); Book Fair in the library 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (Monday through Thursday)

Dress: Sport's Team Day

Service: Representatives from seventh and eighth grades at food bank, Christ's Kitchen, VCAM and St. Vincent de Paul.

Open house: For prospective parents and students, 6:30 p.m. in school cafeteria.

Tuesday: A+ For America: In Our Students

Events: Prayer Service and Flag Ceremony at Flag Pole at 10:05 a.m. Parents, teachers, or relatives in the military and/or veterans to attend in uniform; Buddy Day in the morning; OLV Knowledge Bowl in the afternoon; parents visit classrooms and join children for lunch; Book Fair continues.

Dress: Patriotic Day

Wednesday: A+ For America: In Our Nation

Events: Grandparents Day, St. Vincent de Paul Food Train starting at 1 p.m., parents visit classrooms, Book Fair continues.

Dress: School uniform

Service: Students begin collecting money for the African missions

Thursday: A+ For America: In Our Vocations

Events: Africa presentation by Sister Laura Toman, last day for Book Fair, parents visit classrooms and join their children for lunch.

Dress: Africa Safari Day

Service: Students will deliver baskets and sing for the Sisters at Incarnate Word Convent.

Friday: A+ For America: In Our Faculty, Staff and Volunteers

Events: All School Mass

Dress: Church uniform

Early Dismissal: 12:30 p.m.

Uniform: Spirit Shirts with crazy hats

8:15-8:30 a.m.: Prayer service

Community service locations:

Senior Citizens Center on Murray Street, Hearthstone Assisted Living, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and Adopt-A- Pet.

Pre-kindergarten, third and fourth grade: Each class creates a "Book of Thanks" to service organizations, like the Victoria Fire Department, Sheriff's office and police department.


Uniform: Regular uniform - National Junior Honor Society inductees wear Sunday best.

8:15-8:30 a.m.: Prayer service

8:45-9:45 a.m.: NJHS induction and reception in the gym.

9:45-10:45 a.m.: Partner activities.

10:45: Regular schedule. No homework day.

1-3 p.m.: Open house. NJHS students will give tours.

During open house, we are on regular classroom schedule.


Uniform: Camouflage day

8:15-8:30 a.m.: Prayer service

8:45-9:30 a.m.: Support staff and parent appreciation thank-you letter writing. Museum visits follow from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

In the afternoon: Eighth grade will write messages of appreciation, hope and encouragement in Bibles to be sent to troops overseas.


Uniform: 50's-style dress.

8:15-8:30 a.m.: Prayer service

8:45-10:15 a.m.: Spelling bee

10:15-11:00 a.m.: Volleyball game - Teachers/staff vs. eighth grade

1-3 p.m.: Career Day Speakers - Special guests will be speaking to students about their career choices.

3-3:25 p.m.: Sock hop for all in the gym.


Uniform: Yellow, green, blue shirts with jeans

8:15-9 a.m.: Liturgy celebrating grandparents

9:30-11:45 a.m.: Field Day in the gym

11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: School-wide sack lunch in classrooms.

12:30 p.m.: Early dismissal
