I know that Victoria College hosts an event that helps area food banks every year. Could you give me more information about that?
On Sunday, Feb. 13, Victoria College will host the Empty Bowls project for the seventh consecutive year beginning at 11 a.m. in the VC Student Center. Throughout the year, VC art students and other local artists gather to create unique keepsake bowls for the project and will donate about 500 of their creations for this year's event.
Additionally, two of VC's employees donate their time to organize this event and contribute their own handmade pottery. Because the event is generally held on or near Valentine's Day, organizers and artists typically include many collectible heart-shaped bowls among those available for sale. Over the years, the heart-shaped bowls have become an iconic part of Victoria's Empty Bowls project.
The handcrafted bowls sell for $15 and entitle purchasers to a bowl of soup and bread. Soup may be eaten from the purchased bowl and washing stations are available for those who wish to do so, but disposable bowls are also available.
A delicious variety of soups and bread are donated by the area's finest restaurants and caterers, many of whom have remained loyal supporters of the Empty Bowls project since the first event in 2004.
Also during the Empty Bowls event, attendees may participate in a silent auction or watch pottery demonstrations. There will also be handmade items for sale crafted by VC art students in addition to the bowls donated as Empty Bowls keepsakes.
The community has always been very supportive of this event. Over the past six years, more than $55,000 has been raised to help Victoria's local charities.
Proceeds from the Empty Bowls project benefit Christ's Kitchen, Victoria Community Food Bank, Victoria County Senior Citizens Center, Victoria Christian Assistance Ministry and the Victoria College Art Scholarship.
Sponsors and volunteers are needed for this event. If you would like to help, please call 361-582-2590 or 361-582-2416 for more information.
