A 65-year-old Victoria woman died instantly Saturday morning when a tractor-trailer driving in the wrong lane collided with her car.
The woman, Tiofila Retiz and boyfriend Abel Narvaez, who was driving the 2001 BMW, were going northbound to San Marcos on U.S. 183 when the southbound tractor-trailer went into their lane. Narvaez suffered minor injuries, and the driver of the truck, Gustavo Avila-Perez, of New Braunfels, was not injured. Avila-Perez, who was avoiding a third vehicle entering the roadway, was not cited, a Department of Public Safety spokesman said Sunday.
Narvaez said he and Retiz lived together and dated for 18 years.
"I'll miss her like hell. She was my life," Narvaez, 58, said.
Retiz worked as a title clerk for Victory Honda on North Navarro Street in Victoria and was the mother of two daughters, Felicia Retiz, 43, and Suzanne Quinney, 46, who live in Austin.
"She loved us very much and took care of everybody. That's how she was," Felicia Retiz said.
A funeral will be Wednesday at Grace Funeral Home in Victoria. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., and a rosary will be recited at 7. Retiz arranged her own funeral plans two years ago and elected to be cremated.
"We know we're going to do something with her ashes, but we don't know what yet," Felicia Retiz said.
In lieu of flowers, Retiz requests that donations be made to the Dorothy H. O'Connor Adopt A Pet Foundation.
