BAY CITY - In the event of a hurricane or an emergency situation, Matagorda County Emergency Management office is ready to act.

In preparation for Tropical storm Don, Doug Mathis, emergency management director, said they are taking several steps to ensure the safety of the county.

"Pre-preparation is like a scrimmage before football season begins," he said.

Contacting the National Weather Service, city, county and state agencies is done as soon as they see a disturbance in the Gulf.

"We are monitoring the system very closely," he said.

The team also contacts local hospitals, nursing homes and the Red Cross in preparation for any weather related emergencies.

"We call them and ask them to dust off their emergency plans and to be prepared," he said.

The county also works in coordination with all of the chemical plans in the area, including South Texas Project Nuclear Power Plant.

Mathis said the county will be prepared no matter the outcome.

"Just keep an umbrella handy," he said. "We may need it this weekend."
