Just a few days into summer break, the Victoria school district is asking kids to come back.
The VISD Summer Recreation Program will kick off Monday and offer an unstructured, laid-back opportunity for fun for any school-aged kid.
"We offer any kind of thing we can do with a ball," said James Dorsett, one of the program's organizers.
From volleyball to ping pong to basketball, the program offers an open gym and equipment and allows kids to come and go throughout the day.
"We were looking for a way to get kids involved in things to increase our participation at the high school and junior high level," Dorsett said.
He said the summer program has been open to the community for five years, and both kids and the supervisors seem to enjoy playing sports or just lounging in the air conditioning with friends.
The best part, though, is the food.
Thanks to designated federal money, the summer recreation program is able to offer free breakfast and lunch to the kids each day.
"It's a great way to get the kids out of the house," Dorsett said.
