Victoria Fire Department firefighters work to put out a fire on Lone Tree Road just south of John Stockbauer Drive on Sunday. At least 45 acres of grass and brush were burned at four separate locations. The cause is still under investigation.

About 45 acres of brush and pasture burned Sunday night in Victoria after four fires ignited along the side of the John Stockbauer Road near the railroad tracks about 5 p.m.

Shortly after, another fire ignited near the intersection of Lone Tree and John Stockbauer, then again near Delmar Drive and Hanselman Road.

Victoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Roger Hempel said each of the fires appeared to be connected, but could only speculate on how they started.

"We think it may have been someone dragging a barbecue pit behind their car and dropping hot coals ... Each of the fires started near the road," Hempel said. "We don't know for sure, though. It's still under investigation."

Lone Tree Volunteer Fire Department and Victoria County Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Hempel said no structures burned in the fires and no one was injured. Each of the fires were contained about 7:30 p.m.
