The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent held its annual Agency Relations Conference and 25th Anniversary Celebration on May 20 at the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Victoria.

About 200 people attended representing food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters from 90 agencies in the food bank's 11-county service.

H-E-B received the Benfactor's Award, the food bank's highest honor.

Dennis Brown, food bank executive director, had high praise for H-E-B.

"H-E-B has been a partner of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent throughout our 25-year history. Without their years of support and continued interest in this program the food bank would not have grown and prospered like it has," said Brown.

Eddie Garcia, an H-E-B employee for more than 50 years, attended the conference and receive the award on behalf of the store.

This was most fitting because Garcia was there 25 years ago helping the fledgling food bank get started, Brown said.

Other awards included

Helping Hands Award presented to the Victoria postal workers and South Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of America, for conducting annual food drives. Both have raised more than 130,000 pounds of food during the last 11 years.

Service awards: Robert Duran Caring & Sharing Food Pantry in Palacios, 15 years; the First United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Seadrift, 10 years; the Weimar We Can FFA Food Pantry, 10 years; and the Encounter Community Outreach in Victoria, five years.
