Generals edge Copperheads in 10 to earn series sweep

June 19, 2011 at 1:19 a.m.

The Victoria Generals and Coppell Copperheads played for nearly four hours on Saturday night at Riverside Stadium.

The teams combined for 15 runs, 22 hits and 13 errors. The teams used a combined 11 pitchers, who combined to issue 14 bases on balls.

"That was an interesting game, wasn't it," said Generals coach Ryan Wagner.

Wagner left the stadium happy after the Generals (7-9) captured an 8-7 win in 10 innings to sweep the two-game series against the Texas Collegiate League leading Copperheads (10-6).

John Lonngoria hit a one-out bases loaded single to right-center field over a drawn in outfield to bring home Kyle Arnsberg with the winning run.

Longoria had preserved the tie by throwing out pinch runner Rafael Pineda at the plate in the top of the 10th.

Michael McGraw had four hits for the Generals, including a RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 7.

Arnsberg attempted to score from second on McGraw's hit, but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Shane Klemcke.

Generals relievers Jared Hopper, Roman Madrid, Covey Morrow and Phillip Garcia limited the Copperheads to one run and shut them out for the final six innings.

The Generals had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but Coppell reliever Sam Friend got Trent Wagner to hit into a fielder's choice for the final out.

Arnsberg led off the 10th with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Grayson Porter. McGraw was walked intentionally and the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.

Santiago Ruiz walked to load the bases and Longoria fell behind in the count 0-2 before connecting for his game-winning hit.

The Generals return to Riverside Stadium to play the East Texas Pump Jacks on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
